How to write a paper without annoying the readers and driving them crazy

I am no expert in writing papers. I have not written too many of them either (just 8 in total, of which 2-3 were my writing). But I have read quite a few papers to know what is considered ABSOLUTELY annoying to the reader. A lot of scientists, when reviewing papers only look at the scientific content and the data. They don't care much about the writing. I on the other hand, care a LOT about the writing. The text of the paper. May be its because I'm too dumb to make sense of the figures directly without having to read through the text, but I think the text in the paper is an integral part. As an author you end up spending a LOT of money to publish your text.. also think of the trees getting chopped up to make paper to accommodate the text!! So my 2 cents is that an author needs to, and in fact most authors do, spend a LOT of time and energy "writing" and effectively communicating their findings to the scientific audience in a coherent manner.

We recently reviewed a paper for our journal club meeting and a colleague picked a very recent Cell - Stem cell paper for all of us to discuss. Before I go any further, for all of you "non-geeky" readers, if any, I must tell you that Cell - Stem Cell is a journal with one of the HIGHEST impact factors among life science related journals. It doesn't get any better or bigger than a Cell paper and getting it published there is extremely difficult. But this recent paper that I'm referring to was a piece of crap in terms of the writing. The first figure legend (for the non-geeks: it's the text at the bottom of the figure to tell the readers what the figure actually means, as in all the stuff about the type of cell used, the amount of drug/chemical/reagent added, the time, what the graph/picture shows and all that jazz goes in the figure legend) had 2 words in it. I'm not kidding. Figure legend 1A had 2 words "Colony size", with no explanation what so ever about what the colonies are, where they came from.. nothing!! I'm of the opinion that a figure legend needs to be so good that the reader needs to get most of the information about the experiment without having to read through the "Methods" section, or actually having to search through the entire paper for the explanation. But I did search through the paper since this was just figure 1 and I HAD to read through it entirely. And when I did search, I couldn't find it there. Later I figured that the explanation for figure 1A was after figure 3. Turns out that there were 3 authors who had apparently contributed equally to the paper, and my guess is they just sat and pasted each of their texts together and did not have anyone read through it. I have no idea what the PI (principal investigator) or other people in the lab did when they read the paper.. turns out the prof is quite big in the field which is probably why it got into Cell Stem Cell.
Anyways, I'm okay with authors getting confused with their drafts and accidentally using an older draft/version of the text while focusing on the figures entirely.. accidents happen...but seriously what were the REVIEWERS of the paper doing?? Did they only look at the name of the authors and the figures and absolutely ignore the text??? Did they not even skim through the text, if not read it word by word??? Do most reviewers do that?? I'm seriously wondering how stringent the review process is, especially with journals like Cell Stem cell. Totally drives me mad!

Mebbe I'm being too dramatic about this.. but I just think that when you're writing or doing something that other people will judge you for/about, you might as well put your heart and soul into it and do a great job and stop getting on people's nerves by communicating effectively and doing it the right way. And when you're asked to judge somebody else's work as a reviewer, please realize that it's your responsibility and your job to point out and clear up that somebody's crap before it goes into press and gets read by nitwits like me. That's the bottom line of this seemingly endless rant...

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..

A n I bought our first tree (artificial because I don't like the idea of cutting a tree/part of a tree just for decoration purposes) and set it up last weekend. It's a lott of fun to go tree shopping, buy ornaments and decorate the house with the tree and lights. It makes the whole house so beautiful and bright and makes the mood so festive. Loving it! We even set up a nativity scene -
Nice ain't it? It reminds me of Golu during Navaratri. In the US, it's hard to celebrate Indian festivals in a really grand scale (since most of them end up on weekdays and you have to run to work). So I thought we might as well enjoy the cheer of the American holiday season and add our bit to it!! :) Fun fun!! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Much ado about small things..

I realized that I tend to blog more about one part of my life, going yada yada about everything a lab has to offer.. the struggles,  the happiness that get churned out when you work there, so on and so forth. For sometime, at least for a post or two, I'm gonna change the focus and blog about other things I'm doing in life.

The way I seem to have this in my head is quite like Bridget Jones's diary entry.. writing down in points, which is probably what I should do to save myself time. Writing a blog post is sometimes like a warm-up session before a work out. Putting things down in "pen and paper" sort of kicks my lazy brain awake. It's not tiring because you're not writing about/for work and you're just writing about trivial things in life, which no body in fact even cares about. So here I go -

Travel: November has been a good month..actually been great. Got to travel a lot! Went to Orlando for the conference, which I AM NOT going to draw too much attention to in this post, because this is strictly a non-work related jotting. Went on an awesommmmeee 7-day cruise with hubby dearest to Mexico. We docked at Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. A and I tried snorkeling for the first time and it was my first experience of "swimming" in the ocean. Realized that cruises are a lott of fun actually. You are forced to relax and be gaja vetti. I don't think I was this vetti even in Pilani.. it beats any form of vettiness I've by far ever experienced. My routine for those 7 days was more like - Wake up from bed- eat breakfast - sit for an hour in the jacuzzi - sleep under the sun - read Wodehouse and laugh hard - eat lunch - sleep under the sun - watch TV in the room - read - walk around in the ship - get decked up for dinner - eat - accompany A to stand up comedy shows - sleep! What a life! But I realized that 7 days of utter laziness is a bit much for me. I could do 4 or 5 days at a stretch of doing nothing, but not more than that.. by the end of the 5th day, I was ready to get back home and do something.. and oh did I mention, it was 7 days without the phone and facebook/mail. But a really fab experience! I'd definitely do it again, for a shorter period though.

Books read: Wodehouse and more and more of Wodehouse. He's the champion of spinning a yarn with the most trivial things at hand. This time it's about Bertie Wooster's ability to get into trouble with/for a cow-creamer and a brown leather book. I'm not yet done reading it.."The code of the Woosters".. it's not because the book is long.. it's mainly because seeping under the sun seemed to come more naturally than reading under the sun, while on the cruise! A on the other hand devoured 4 books in 7 days, with one being a huge bible on Steve Jobs's life!

Culinary skills: Tried making molaga podi.. Not a bad first attempt at all.

Anyways, I MUST get back to work now.. but I'm gonna sign this post off with this pic..

True that, don't you think?

The awards

American Heart Association Scientific Sessions,2011 will be memorable for me. Was blessed with 2 awards - One was the "Best Manuscript Award, 2011" from Circulation Research, which was awarded on Sunday, November 13 at the Peabody International. I knew about this a while back and I've already blogged about this. But quite unexpectedly and as a fortunate stroke of serendipity, another award was handed to us on Tuesday, November 15 at the Hard Rock Cafe. This one was the "Most Downloaded  Original Research Article from Circulation Research, 2011".
Was damnn thrilled to receive the 2 awards :) An amazingly ecstatic feeling..
Before I go any further, I HAVE TO pay my thanks to everyone who contributed to the paper - the collaborators for their mice, plasmids and reagents, Yasu - the post doc in Dr. Sadoshima's lab for helping me with the paper and most importantly to my mentor, Dr. Sadoshima himself. No amount of "Thank you"s will be sufficient for him and of course to God! Am putting up 2 pics of me getting the awards. I will click pics of the plaques separately and put it up here! Its a nice feeling.

Once nice thing about these pics is that I have both my mentors (past and present) standing next to me! Both pics aren't of the greatest resolution, but I waana put 'em up here for the memories they will carry for the rest of my life! The first one's from Sunday and the second one's from Tuesday!

A Million thanks to God for being extremely kind!

Just found this picture from the Circ Res Facebook page - Sunday's award -

4 years and still waiting..

Missed the travel award from AHA for the 4th year. Seems quite elusive this one.. Here's my saga with this award... I didn't apply for one in 2008, in my first year of submission at AHA when it was an oral ppt. In 2009, it was a poster - so dint get it. 2010, I had an oral ppt but it did not fit into the categories listed out by AHA. 2011- again a poster. The chances of getting the award while your abstract's selected for a poster ppt is very bleak.. I guess it's because of the scoring. Your abstract gets selected as an oral or poster presentation depending upon the score it gets, with oral being the higher of the two. It's obviously not the end of the world that I haven't gotten this.. I'm happy with the award I just recently received (Needless to say, infinite thanks and gratitude go out to the mentor).. But I really want to keep track of how long it's actually gonna take me to win the AHA travel award.. I don't know why.. but just want to. I remember a friend got it the very first year she applied, and I know of colleagues who have received it 2-3 times (although you're allowed to receive it only once).. but its still evading me. And I will wait to see if sometime in the future I can succeed in living up to my expectations wrt this award. Amen!

The daily road trip

It's over 1.5 months since A and I have moved to Orange County, California and decided to do killer commutes to work everyday, with him having to drive 120 miles up north to LA everyday and back, and me having to  drive 160 miles down south to San Diego (and back). The surprising part is we haven't become sick and bored of the commute yet. Recently, with the state of affairs in this country, I've come to the conclusion that husband and wife living in the same city and having jobs has become a super luxury. You should consider yourself really fortunate and lucky and be prepared to make lots of adjustments to keep it going, which is why A and I each spend 3 hours on the road everyday driving, trying to live under one roof and yet hold on to our precious jobs.
I was initially a little apprehensive about being able to do the long long commute..people were trying to caution me that its not going to be easy and its a drain of energy, resources and even money (we are still paying our debts to this country and trying to do our part to revive the economy.. after 3 years of helping the airline industry, its now the gasoline and automobile industry!!). But quite interestingly , I am actually enjoying the commute. It's like I get 3 hours to do a bunch of things that I would probably not think of doing otherwise. Listening to music, catching up with friends over the phone (HANDS FREE, connected to the car), listening to audiobooks are quite common.. Sometimes I do those and some other times, I end up praying.. just play the Rudram, Abhirami Andhadhi or Vishnu Sahasranamam and thank/crib to God. I realized I get to sing a lot and practice my music in the car.. of course its not the ideal way to practice, but who cares.. its fun. I get to listen to the audio of some of my all time favourite Thalaivar movies over and over again..
All in all, I'm totally loving the time I get for myself. Its sufficient time to destress, to introspect about life, people, the funny ways of God, lab, science, research and everything else. It's turning out to be quite a jolly experience actually!

PS to self: When life throws lemons at you, learn to make lemonade of it!

Tolerance...

Where does tolerance actually end? When you are tolerant towards people with their differences in caste, color, religion, race, sex, it's good. But suppose somebody makes a racist comment in front of you, although not directly at you, are you still supposed to be tolerant? Does it count as intolerance to open your mouth and say that its wrong/politically incorrect/unethical to say things like that??

Just wondering.. I'm telling myself to let it go and be tolerant of other people's flaws..But am I on the other hand being tolerant of somebody else's intolerance??
If people in Nazi Germany hadn't been so tolerant of one dictator's intolerance, could 60 million people's lives have been saved??

Hmmmm.. where and how does all this figure.. I wonder... :S And where does tolerance actually end??

So fragile..

Heard the shocking news of the death of a batchmate and friend this morning. Made me realize how very fragile life is! Recent events in some of my friend's lives makes me feel like we take life tooo much for granted. The very fact that we are alive today, doing everyday's tasks and being there for people and with people is such a gift. You dont realize it until you hear a shocker like this. A sudden death, just like that...
especially when you talk about that person to friends just a week or two back or even think about them.. and then a week later you hear the news that they are no more. Makes you feel so small. So tiny. So fragile...

May your soul rest in peace. Will always remember you from the 29C and 4 to school and from the temple. I don't think I've ever NOT seen you during Pradosham! May God be with your family!

4th year!

Am a wee bit thrilled as I always am during this time of the year. Its another acceptance at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions. Happy that its the 4th year in a row. This year it will be a poster. So Orlando for the second time. Thank you God for all my mentors, past and present!
I obviously wish it were an oral, but considering I just started working on this project in April and submitted something in May and it got accepted.. I shd definitely be grateful!

Road Trip Diary - 1: Cross Country Road Trip - 16 states in 9 days

Aloha! Finally I've begun my big 100th post! Woohoooo! 5 years and the 100th post.. not the best record, but who cares! It's been a fun journey so far!
Just got done with "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" and the "making of the movie" videos and I've got the perfect inspiration to blog about one of the best road trips I've ever had by far. I've been wanting to blog about it for the longest time, but was too lazy to move my a** and actually put it down here. But finally the moment has arrived!!
Road trips are super fun always. You get to see a lot of places in one shot. You're more relaxed. Plans can be changed. It's more flexible. And one of my favs- I can carry whatever I want to.. a whole bottle of shampoo, soap, food.. nobody to stop and check the amount of liquids I carry. Last year my big move from the east coast to the west coast of the USA was by road. Obviously I did not travel alone..had two very wonderful people for company. We covered 16 states in 9 days during the Thanksgiving holidays. It was well timed and well planned and a really nice thing was that the guys just had to take off for 3 days from work, to do the 9 day trip.
I'm gonna quickly try and recollect and jot it all down here. For the most part we bunked over at friend's places instead of staying in hotels.. and thats what made it so special! My mosttt sincere thanks to every single person in whose house we stayed and had a great time all through the trip! It meant a huge deal to all three of us!

Nov 19, 2010 (Friday): It was my last day in the lab. I was supposed to wind up everything and hand all of the stuff over to the prof by noon. The plan was that Rahul and I were supposed to drive down from New Jersey (NJ) to North Carolina (NC) - 8 hours away from each other. Apu was flying in to NC early next morning from Seattle in the night's red eye flight. We were supposed to sleep over at Apu's friend's in NC and pick him up from the airport. But I got off to a reallyy late start.. by the time I got done inventorying and handing stuff over to the prof it was past 5 PM. I picked up Rahul from his place and he helped me clear out and get done with the rest of the packing and moving from my apartment in Harrison, NJ, where having lived for 5 years I'd accumulated the world's junk! All cleared and thrown away/packed and dumped in every visible space of the car, we started driving, feeling supremely dead already. It was around 8:30 PM and we couldn't imagine having to drive 8 hours without any rest. We headed straight to Saravana Bhawan thinking we could mull things over awesome food! I suggested that we sleep for a bit in Virginia instead of driving straight to North Carolina like zombies. So I quickly called every single friend of mine in VA to find out we could crash at their place for a few hours. A bunch of them were unreachable. Finally my friend from George Mason Univ, Santhosh picked up and simply asked us to come over no matter how late it was. Oh God what relief that was! With great difficulty, Rahul and I drove down till VA in turns and gate crashed into Santhosh's place. It was past 1:30 AM when we reached VA.

Nov 20, 2010 - Sat: We were up and ready to hit the road by 4 AM so that we could pick Apu up at 8. The timely power nap made us feel alive at the least! Before we left, we realized that there was simply no room in the car AT ALL and so just outside Santhosh's place, we trashed some of my things.. some vessels and kadais and loose bags with things clumsily packed the previous day in all the exhaustion. We thought we'll try and find a post office on the way and ship things out to Kala's. We drove through the country side from VA to NC listening to tamil gaana/kuthu songs to keep us awake. By the time we reached Greensboro, NC it was around noon.. I have no clue what took us that long to get there..(its only a 4 hour drive) I think it was because we were trying to dispose of my things along the way to make room in the car!! Just before the Saturday noon closing time, we sprinted into a USPS and begged them to allow us to ship some boxes and finally made more space in the small Toyota Yaris! We finally reached the airport and just handed over the car to Apu. I went behind and crashed for what seemed like eternity and the most blissful sleep ever! :P Apu drove from NC to Atlanta, a nice 6 hour drive on I-85S. For saturday night, we were staying over at Ramya's place. We went to Ramya's and she, Archana, Ashwin and us went for dinner at a restaurant. We had one of THE BEST Bitsian Lachcha sessions EVER!! Twas a laugh riot as usual!! :D We hung out until pretty late in the night at the restaurant and went to Ramya's and after playing with Laya, we continued the lachcha for a longgg time! Can't remember what we were talking about.. but quite like most lachchas, there isnt much content to it.. you just remember having a greatt time laughing about everything and nothing!!

Nov 21, 2010- Sunday: The next morning after a nice 8 hour rest, we were all enthused and ready to go zooming through the country. Ramya's MIL made supremelllyyyy awesome Pongal and Ghotsu! GODDDDDDDDDD.. I can still remember that feeling we had.. great food, awesome rest and a nicee relaxed trip thru the country ahead of us.. it ain't getting better than that! Our next stop was to be Memphis, TN. We drove through Alabama, listening to "Sweet Home Alabama" like Southerners, keeping track of time when we drove from Eastern Time to Central time, stopped at "Pete's famous hot dog" in Birmingham, AL, and then through Mississippi, "the land of Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Jazz and blues" and into Memphis, Tennessee.

Every time we entered a state and the state welcomed us, we stopped over to click pics by the welcome board! Apu in the meantime had begun an active photo blog on Facebook with pics from the trip, and since it was Thanksgiving holiday season, the reactions we got were most positive and encouraging and fun!! It set the travel and holiday mood for a lot of our friends, atleast I'd like to think so! In Memphis, we stopped for a bit at Beale street, hopped into a bar, listened to some cool jazz, attempted to click pics in the middle of a really quiet street and got kicked out of the street by cops ("Get outa the street", they bellowed over the mic!), and finallly reached our dear host's house - the newly married Pattas and his wife! Again it was an amazing night of fun, lachcha and laughter!

Nov 22, 2010 - Monday: The next day while the boys were getting ready, Pattas and I headed out to the amazing temple in Memphis, TN. It was around 10-15 miles from his house. I was nervous about my small little car making it all the way thru the country with all of my luggage and wanted to pray for its well being! I was amazed at how big the temple in Memphis was.. one of the biggest in the country I think! We came out of the temple, when my dear prof called, asking for all of my data! He said he wanted it immediately and could not wait for 4 days until we reached CA. So the 3 of us headed from Pattas's to a best buy near by. I spent the next coupla hours transferring data from my laptop (which thankfully I had with me) onto an external hard drive that I bought there.. and then again in the middle of nowhere, we were hunting for a post office to ship the external hard drive to the prof. We lost a few hours in the process and we had a long 8 drive to Dallas, Texas planned for the day. We finally hit the road by late afternoon, passed through Arkansas, clicked pics, while I was a little grumpy all along, until we finally reached Uma's place in Dallas by around 10 in the night.

Nov 23, 2010 - Tuesday: Uma and Arun (and Swathi) were waiting for us with superbbb food. (Seriously wherever we went during the road trip, we were welcomed with amazinggg food. We thanked God every step of the way for the amazing friends we had!) We had our fill, put lachcha, slept, woke up, played with Swathi for a little bit and then headed to downtown Dallas the next morning. We saw the spot where John F Kennedy was assassinated, clicked pics (needless to say!), put some lachcha with some historian there who was very eager to give us his interpretation of the assassination and finally hit the road by noon. We were headed to Albuquerque, New Mexico and we decided to drvie through the historic Rt 66. Quite unfortunately we covered most of Rt 66 through the night, but we stopped outside the Big Texan, which is known to serve the country's worst burgers and is famous for it and you get free 72 oz steak if you can eat it in 1 hour. We also stopped at the famous cadillac ranch just a few mins before sunset, thanked our stars we made it before sun down and clicked pics. While Rahul and Apu drove through the dark, I was dozing off and on behind, not being very enthused to drive in the dark through the wild country side. With a cowboy hat perched over our heads, we finally reached Albuquerque late in the night. We were actually quite surprised to see how big the city was, with its dazzling lights while you drive down through the desolate highway.

Nov 24, 2010 - Wednesday: We stayed in a Comfort Inn at Alb. On Wednesday morning, my family friend Roshan joined us and he was our local guide in the city. We drove through Old Town, took a small hike in Rio Grande Nature State Park, drove upto the Sandia Mountains and back. We also took the Yaris for a brief check up at a mechanic since the boys were getting the feeling that the car was beginning to whine with all the load and the work we were putting it through! Once the mechanic passed the car as being fit to undertake the rest of the journey, we went to a nice restaurant and had New Mexican cuisine! From there, we headed on to Chandler, Arizona to meet Kutty and stay over at her place. Again we reached sometime in the night.. and her parents and she had cooked fabbb food for us! The same super fun routine of food, lachcha and rest followed! :)

Nov 25, 2010 - Thanksgiving Thursday: The next day Geethu (whom I was seeing after almost 5 years), her hubby and Chak came to Kutty's place and again we had a supppperrr fun Bitsian lachcha session. Had a fabbb time there and when it was tiem to leave, Kutty's mom packed lemon rice and curd rice and Vadam for us for our trip to Las Vegas. We set off from Chandler after noon, and it was just a 4 hour drive to Las Vegas, which I decided to drive on my own, to compensate for the mega sleeping sessions that I was having in the back seat of the car from TX to NM to AZ. We reached Vegas and stayed over at Ballys, by which time Apu had wisely "checked in" and called out to all bitsians in the area. We ended up having dinner with a whole bunch of bitsians hanging out at Vegas for the thanksgiving hols, many of whom we were seeing after 8 years. Again a super fun mega lachcha session it was, catching up with everybody. It felt like we'd just randomly walked into Sky on a Saturday evening and were sitting on the Amoeba!! :D Super nostalgic.

Nov 26, 2010 - Black Friday - The next morning we drove to Hoover Dam, close to Las Vegas. We were simply awed by the architectural marvel there. The views from the Callaghan-Tillman bridge were superb and we stood by the state line dividing AZ and NV and clicked tonnes of pics again! That night while I just crashed at the hotel, the boys headed out to the casinos and had their bit of fun.

Nov 27, 2010 - Saturday - Before we left Las Vegas on Saturday morning, Nari and Pooja joined us as they celebrated their first wedding anniversary. We had a short lachcha session with them and headed out on our last leg of the trip - the drive from Las Vegas to San Jose, CA. Its supposed to be 9 hour drive, but I think it took us longer than 11-12 hours bcos of the horrendous traffic. Apu and Rahul took turns to weed through the traffic and I was sitting behind with the luggage, until we finally reached home at San Jose.

All in all it was one of the best trips of our lives. Driving from one coast to the other in any country is an amazingggg experience, and in a country like US, which is specially very road trip friendly (you have restrooms and restaurants and safe gas stations all through the way), it definitely is an experience of a life time. If you are somebody that likes to travel and likes road trips, just jump into the car and do it!! Its soo totally worth it. The next time you make a job and need to move from one state to the other, go by road. Its the best way to see a lot of different places and you get the acutal feel of this country!
Before I wind up this reallyy long post, which has brought back a lot of memories for me, seriously and sincerely.. many many thanks to every single friend who hosted us, offered us amazzzzzzzzzzzinggg food and rest and made the trip sooo special. If we had stayed in hotels all of the 9 nights that we were travelling it wouldn't have been fun at all. The experience was sooo great because every night we were meeting different people.. catching up with them and putting completely different lachchas with everyone and sharing a laugh for altogether a different reason!
Totally makes life worth it when you make trips like these. Soo looking forward to the West coast - north to south road trip next week!! :)

Mahabharat ravings

Last summer, I realized that Mahabharat was actually there on youtube. All 94 episodes in excellent print! Watch it here if you please! (If the link doesn't work, just go on to youtube and type Mahabharat episode 1 and so forth!) These episodes were such an integral part of my thesis writing! I don't think I would have written my papers/thesis without it! Here's why -
1. Its never ending. Trust me, a PhD dissertation thesis will end quicker than Mahabharat.
2. Somebody's always talking and it gives you perfect company even in the middle of the night while you burn the midnight oil.
3. It peps you up immensely. The pandavas go thru a lot of suffering but they end up victorious, thank God for that! It reminds you that all the 'struggles' that you have gone/going through is/will not be futile.
4. It teaches you to surrender! Now, I'm a hugee believer of this philosophy and I've had many a posts preaching (to myself!!) the importance of surrendering.

Here's a few other reasons why B.R Chopra's series is simply wowing!
1. Its so true to what you've studied/read. This series sticks to what you'd learned in school as a kid and ANY movie/televised program which is true to its text/book version is very dear to the heart!
2. Every single character has done a fabulous job. Nitish Baradwaj (Krishna), Gufi Paintal (Shakuni), Puneet Issar (Duryodhan), Pankaj Dheer (Karna), Arjun (Arjun), Mukesh Khanna (Bheeshma), Girija Shankar (Dritarashtra) are some of my favs. I actually thot Pankaj Dheer would have made a great Arjun, but he's awesome as Karna too! Nithish Baradwaj is Krishna just as you might have imagined him with a smile that can enchant you and make you do whatever he wants. In the making of Mahabharat (can be seen here - ) (again simply type out every single part if it doesn't show up), Puneet Issar very aptly says that every single character in the epic is a shade of grey. There's nobody whos pure white or pure black! It's just that some have more white than black! Even Krishna has shades of grey and even Duryodhana has shades of white, when he embraces the son of a charioteer as his close bud, while the rest of the world refuses to see beyond his caste/community!
3. You hindi language and vocabulary improves a LOT. Seriously!
4. Very highly nostalgic. Reminds me of Sunday mornings as a kid when I used to run to Hindi class to finish the weekly tests early and run back home just in time to watch Mahabharat!

So after last year's thesis/paper writing phase, I started watching the series again this year for the second time and I got done with all 94 episodes a coupla weeks back! Hooked Amma to it as well. Its supremely addictive. Never lets you feel lonely and its a lot of culture/moral values packaged beautifully. Try it, its really worth it. (Ps: some of the parts need to be ottified!!)
Many thanks to the Chopras for making some thing like this, to Rajshri videos for bringing it out on youtube and to guys like Chad Hurley and Larry Page for youtube and google!

The one thing I've always wanted to learn

I'm finally learning the one thing I've always wanted to learn. The first time I came to the US in 2003, I used my sister's apt complex pool and that was my first time ever to get into a pool. I realized it's a LOT of fun 'swimming'.. even if I wasn't swimming per se!! I observed some kids in the apartment being taught how to swim by their parents and just did what they did. I pretty much learned on my own how to breathe, float, kick and use my hands(albeit clumsily)! Never realized that all that sitting and splashing around in the pool actually meant anything!
I'm glad I'm finally getting the time and the chance to learn swimming! My first ever 'sport' class and totally loving it. After 5 years of PhD, I'm trying to catch up on life and learning things that I should have learned long time back. Just can't stop feeling excited about it! And yeayy that's one more check mark in my bucket list! :)

Small pleasures in life

It feels great to walk into the lab early in the morning, open your inbox and find this in an email... " We are pleased to highlight these important articles from the latest issues ", followed by my paper! And finding this specially at a time when you're slogging your butt off, clocking in crazyy hours, being the first person to open the lab doors and the last one to lock it up for three back to back days. Life's worth it! :)

lifes the same.

Life as a post-doc a'int very different from a grad student's. You're still pushing yourself to work and get data. Data is just as precious now, as it used to be back when graduation heavily depended on it! You still spend hours in the lab slogging away with that western blot, trying to make sense of all the crap! But it's fun in it's own way. You still get paid pittance. The only difference I find - When I used to walk out of the lab at 11:30 in the night, I had to be watchful of crazy men ready to mug/gun u down in Newark, NJ. Now when I walk out of the lab at 11:30 PM in San Diego, I need to be mindful of some crazy scared animal in the open parking lot ready to spray you down with its stinky scent, because you invaded it's privacy by disturbing it in the night.
Such is life! Amen to that!

Back to the AHA grillmill.

Many more thanks

Early this morning, I became the proud aunt of a 'beautiful' niece. Maitri is what we'll call her! I'm putting the beautiful in quotes, because I still haven't seen her. But I'm sure she is gonna be a beauty, no doubts! I'm all excited for my dear sis and bil! Parenthood is something that comes naturally to them! I'm sure they're gonna be very caring and adorable parents! Thankyou God for everything!

The past year has taught me that surrendering everything is the only way things work. Mebbe I should rephrase it, surrendering is the only way one can deal with questions for which only time has an answer. Unfortunately there are some questions/ circumstances in life which only time can answer. If you surrender, you just drop it and actually tell your mind that things will come by and fall into place. It's more like you are endlessly procrastinating worrying about something when you surrender!! At least that's the way I see it. Surrender, get it off your mind, move on and He WILL take care of things - have faith. This doesn't take away the fact that you need to work and do your job. Do your best and leave the rest to be taken care of. It will be. Amen to that!

Gen!

I decided to drop by here and dust things around a bit..leave a nice note or two to myself...
I feel immensely grateful. Tears well up every time I think of how deeply indebted I am. It's nice that we have other forms of communication, even within and to our own selves, when words clearly fail! Hmmm.. thank you for giving me plenty of reasons to thank you for! I read somewhere that it's a good idea to keep a gratitude journal.. mebbe I should keep a separate section here in this site, just to give thanks.

The wedding's a week away! Amma and I have been shopping like maniacs.. mad zombies scouting around every nook and cranny in pondy bazaar, adyar, besant nagar, alwarpet, cathedral road, nungambakam, mount road, trying to get things done. Much more than the event itself, the preparation for it is loadsa fun. Again, many thanks for helping us find the right things at the right time.
A and I decided to have our own wedding invite, which we designed during Xmas and New year'10. A bumped into 'goanimate' and we found the user friendly flash animation pretty cool. For lack of a better idea, we decided to put our own story as an animation video and then decided to have a wedding website to go with the animation video. Up until the very end, we weren't sure of the site/invite. Sheer laziness to re-create a normal wedding site made us stick on to this one and we were pleasantly surprised at the most receptive response. Thank you for that! Serendipity at its best :)

The oscars and red carpet is quite distracting. This is the first time I'm watching it from India. So over and out!
