sarve jana sukhino bhavanthu

Last few weeks I've been thinking about the importance of the concept- "Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavanthu"... meaning "Let all the people in the world be happy". When I was young I was always taught to say this one line at the end of every prayer...Pray for the happiness of others. But I never really had a chance to realise its significance. However, recently, I've had this situation where a lot of people in my life have been going thru real rough and stressful times, and I've been witnessing or listening to some of their problems. And well, although I'm pretty much having a smooth sail on my own, and although none of those worries affect me directly, I realized that I couldn't be very happy when ALL those close ppl were affected. Its like this...sometimes when u are cheerful, its not just nice, but also important to have another person receive that cheer and happiness from you and reciprocate in a similar manner. But when they are not in that position bcos of undue circumstances or situations, u feel not just empathetic but sumtimes sad too. And beyond a point u just personally want that person to be out of the problem and be all smiley and gay again. U wait for time to be the magic healer and start praying that they may be happy at the earliest...
So its true...sometimes for u to be happy, u DO need others around u to be fine and happy themselves...or atleast free of worries. The philosophy of Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavanthu... or Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu is indeed important.
